LAYTON -- The Layton Christian Eagles still aren't at 100 percent. But the rest of Region 14 should be aware by now that the Eagles are getting close.
Still missing Will Beard due to a toe injury, the Eagles soared past Salt Lake Lutheran 79-53 on Monday afternoon to finish their Martin Luther King Jr. tournament with a pair of home wins.
That's five victories in a row for the LCA boys.
"No coach is ever satisfied with our defense, but we have made some progress in that area," LCA coach Bobby Porter said.
"We've focused on our defense this year."
The Eagles held the Lynx to just nine points in the opening quarter to take a commanding lead. LCA maintained the margin the rest of the game.
Ryan Jessop led the Eagles with 18 points. Justin Brown scored 17 points, Antwain Harvey added 16 points and seven steals, and Juan Manuel Silveira also added 16 for LCA, 8-3 on the season.
Brown pointed out that Harvey, Hunter Thompson and Sam Richardson also grabbed five rebounds each.
"I think we're doing a good job of shutting guys down and hitting the boards well," Porter said. "Now we have some big region games ahead against South Summit and Juab."
The Eagles started slowly this season, missing Brown for the first few games to injury.
Beard is expected back as early as next week.
"I felt like the (MLK) tournament was a good event," Porter said. "We'll have six teams play next season."
Moses Manning scored 24 points, while Spencer Walker added 17 for Salt Lake Lutheran.
